Windsor-Essex FIRST Robotics Announces 2024-25 Bursary Recipients

MEDIA RELEASE: Windsor-Essex FIRST Robotics Bursary Awards

WINDSOR, ON. – July 3, 2025

Windsor-Essex FIRST Robotics (WEFR), a volunteer organization dedicated to promoting FIRST Robotics Canada programming in Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent, has awarded five exceptional local high school graduates each a $1,000 bursary. This annual award aims to support students who have shown outstanding commitment to their FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) teams, demonstrated leadership in their communities, and exhibited a passion for STEM disciplines.

Michelle Bondy, a board member of WEFR and chair of the selection committee, expressed her excitement over the quality of applications this year, noting, “We received many excellent applications this year from members of teams across Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent. It is always a pleasure to read how each student has contributed to their FIRST Robotics Competition team and to their community. Each and every one of the applicants should be proud of their accomplishments!”

The bursaries are named in honor of James Broom and Spencer James, both of whom made significant contributions to local FIRST Robotics teams before their untimely passing in 2014. James Broom was a student at Maranatha Christian Academy, while Spencer James served as a mentor at Belle River High School. The awards not only commemorate their legacy but also highlight the importance of commitment and leadership within the robotics community.

Larry Koscielski, VP of Process and Technology Development at CenterLine and chair of WEFR, commented on the achievements of the awardees: “It’s been incredible to see the continued resilience and growth of our local teams. These five students stood out for their dedication, leadership, and impact. We wish them all the best in their next chapter and hope they carry the spirit of FIRST with them as they move forward.”

The bursary recipients, along with the high schools they attended and their chosen post-secondary institutions, showcase the diverse talent fostered within the robotics community. This recognition serves as an encouragement for future applicants, emphasizing the importance of hard work, perseverance, and civic engagement.

As WEFR continues its mission to promote STEM education and enhance robotics programming in the region, it celebrates these students who embody the values of the FIRST community. Engaging young minds in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics not only prepares them for careers in these fields but also helps them develop life skills and a sense of community involvement.

In conclusion, the bursary awards highlight the dedication of local students to their education and their communities, while also ensuring their continued support in pursuing higher education. WEFR remains committed to recognizing and supporting the new generations of innovators and leaders, paving the way for a brighter future in STEM fields.
