SOMEONE LIVES HERE

Why did you choose this film?

Innovation is born out of crisis, and in recent history we saw the birth of more innovation than in dealing with the global COVID-19 Pandemic.

As you watch Khaleel’s story unfold, you will see the path he took to tackle a monumental social challenge is the same one taken by brilliant visionaries the world over, who have helped our civilization accomplish the unimaginable, and leaves us with the hope that even though the state of our world is in great transition, once again, innovators like Khaleel will help chart our path forward.

I’M JUST HERE FOR THE RIOT

Image module

Why did you choose this film?

The title is true, I am just here for the riot! As I become a big hockey fan, I’m beginning to envelop myself in the history of the sport and its importance to Canadian culture. I’d like to witness on screen the post-Canucks loss in 2011 Vancouver, and how the quite abnormal occurrence for the country impacted our society. How this moment of mayhem in social media became its own version of a “WANTED” poster unfolds.

P.S. Let’s Go Red Wings!

229 QUEEN STREET WEST

Image module

Why did you choose this film?

As an aspiring journalist and huge music buff, being a Much Music VJ was my dream job as a teen.

I’m looking forward to seeing all the “behind the scenes” footage and hearing what it was like from some of the former VJs. Can’t wait for the Q&A session after the film with my fave, Rick the Temp!

THE LEBANESE BURGER MAFIA

Image module

Why did you choose this film?

There are so many amazing options at WIFF this year that it was really tough to narrow it down to just one choice. But in the end, I have to go with The Lebanese Burger Mafia. I’m a huge fan of everything this movie is about – documentaries, entrepreneurship, marketing and food.

It also gets bonus points for reminding me of George Kalivas’ awesome documentary about Windsor pizza, “The Pizza City You’ve Never Heard Of”.

BLACKBERRY

Why did you choose this film?

So many great choices to choose from this year…

I’ll have to choose the rise and fall of an iconic product and how it changed the world of communication: Blackberry.

Did You Know: Blackberry was founded on March 7, 1984, in Waterloo, Ontario?

TWO DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS

Image module

Why did you choose this film?

I’d love to see “Two Days Before Christmas” because it promises a heartwarming and magical holiday experience. The film’s premise, featuring a diverse cast of quirky characters navigating the chaotic holiday season, immediately draws me in.

I believe that the holiday season can be tough for a lot of people. It can be a time where you feel like your life should be perfect but what truly intrigues me is the message that the movie conveys: this movie reminds us that the most beautiful moments often emerge from life’s imperfections.

FASHION REIMAGINED

Image module

Why did you choose this film?

Over the last decade I’ve been more conscious about my purchases and how I can reduce my own environmental footprint. With this in mind, I’m drawn to this documentary.

Focused on creating clothing that is both sustainable and ethically sourced, this film allows us a portal into Amy Powney’s journey to create a fashion collection with a completely new approach, doing her part in reducing clothing’s impact on our planet.

SMOKE SAUNA SISTERHOOD

Image module

Why did you choose this film?

This film features a smoke sauna tradition from Estonia that women have used in building a community to address trauma and healing.

I find it fascinating that although women throughout history have been so oppressed and dishonored, they found ways to cope and heal through connection with each other.

BLACKBERRY

Image module

Why did you choose this film?

I Picked ‘BlackBerry’ at WIFF, because who can’t resist a slice of Canadian tech history?

From humble beginnings to global impact, it’s the story of the world’s first smartphone pioneers. And who knows, I might just sneak in my old BlackBerry for nostalgia! Fun fact: Did you know Mike Lazaridis, the inventor of the BlackBerry, was only 5 when his family moved to Canada in 1966, settling in Windsor?
