Waterloo Medtech Startup Trials Portable Solution for Rapid Brain Imaging

Timely imaging is crucial for brain health, where quick access to MRI and CT scans can be lifesaving. However, traditional imaging technologies are often hindered by their size and complexity, which limits access, especially in critical situations. Atefeh (Ati) Zarabadi, CEO of AiimSense, identified this gap in neuroimaging and co-founded the Waterloo-based startup in 2019 to create a portable imaging device that utilizes safe electromagnetic technology, eliminating the need for cumbersome machinery typically found in hospitals.

Zarabadi expressed excitement about contributing to a new imaging modality that democratizes brain health care, aiming for a future where diagnosing conditions like strokes and Alzheimer’s disease is as easy as receiving an X-ray or ultrasound. She emphasizes the urgent requirement for timely stroke treatment, stating, “time is brain,” as every minute can lead to irreversible brain damage. The challenges are particularly pronounced for patients in remote areas who may take hours to access specialized imaging machines, often missing critical treatment windows by the time they arrive.

The portable imaging device developed by AiimSense could transform emergency medical responses by providing on-site brain scans, drastically decreasing the likelihood of permanent damage or death. This innovative solution is also projected to be far more affordable—costing around one-twentieth of traditional MRI machines—thus expanding access to numerous hospitals, especially in regions currently underserved by existing technologies.

As AiimSense prepares to test its minimum viable product (MVP) on human subjects and gather data, the focus is on delivering quick and accurate brain health assessments. Zarabadi and her team are driven by the goal of transferring their technology from lab settings to clinical practice, which she identifies as a strong motivational factor in their efforts.

Transitioning from academia to entrepreneurship following her PhD at the University of Waterloo, Zarabadi acknowledges the complexities involved in this journey. She emphasizes the learning curve of overseeing both the technical and commercial aspects, explaining that without a strategic market approach, the technology risks not reaching those in need.

Zarabadi candidly reflects on the challenges faced as an immigrant founder, highlighting the importance of building a supportive network and accessing resources to ease the entrepreneurial journey. Her participation in accelerator programs provides essential mentorship and tools, which are instrumental in navigating the initial stages of her startup.

Recent accolades for AiimSense reflect its potential impact in the healthcare sector. Along with winning first place at the KITE-UHN International Conference on Aging, Innovation, and Rehabilitation's Power Play Pitch Competition, the startup was awarded the Live Long, Live Well Health Award at Inventures 2024.

To further aid their growth, AiimSense has been selected for the inaugural cohort of the Communitech MedTech Accelerator Program, designed to equip founders with resources such as growth coaching, networking with healthcare professionals, and personalized action plans. Zarabadi underscores the necessity of embracing challenges, remaining coachable, and utilizing available resources to advance their mission effectively.

In summary, as AiimSense aims to revolutionize brain health imaging, its portable technology could significantly enhance timely medical intervention for critical conditions, making quality care more accessible for patients, irrespective of their geographical limitations.
