ventureLAB Celebrates the Launch of its Hardware Catalyst MedTech Lab at Sterling Industries

Today, ventureLAB celebrated the opening of its new Hardware Catalyst Initiative (HCI) MedTech Lab at Sterling Industries, a state-of-the-art facility that focuses on the development of hardware devices for medical applications.

“We’re thrilled to launch our MedTech HCI lab here at Sterling Industries in Vaughan. This will enable the development of made-in-Ontario medtech solutions in Ontario, while helping domestic companies to commercialize, grow and scale their businesses for global markets."

- Matt Skynner, Chief Operating Officer at ventureLAB

"This is an exciting opportunity for Ontario and Canada, and we look forward to continuing to pave the way for innovation in the hardware and semiconductor industry,” said Matt Skynner.

Tailored to the needs of startups in the medical hardware space, the lab is equipped with industry standard equipment and testing facilities that can be used to develop and test the functionality of the products designed for medical purposes.

The HCI MedTech Lab at Sterling represents a vision to propel Canada into the future of what is possible at the intersection of MedTech, AI and Hardware. The collaboration aims to bring together the knowledge and experience of individuals and organizations with a strong background in cutting edge hardware development and medical technology, in order to create an environment that will attract MedTech startups to York Region and Ontario, and ultimately benefit patients and healthcare providers alike.

“We're committed to supporting our thriving MedTech sector here in Vaughan, boosting Canada's reputation as a leader in medical innovation while creating new jobs.”

- David Van Slingerland, CEO of Sterling Industries

“Sharing a similar vision, we are excited to partner with ventureLAB. Hosting the new Medtech Innovation Lab is a great opportunity to work together, sharing our experience in getting breakthrough technologies to the patients, doctors and healthcare workers who need them most,” said David Van Slingerland.

Sterling has accumulated significant experience in this field over the years, which has enabled it to offer its clients a range of valuable services. Sterling scales production of medical components and devices with consistent quality, process and regulatory compliance, helping clients deliver successful products by providing scaled production, design-for-manufacturing expertise, supplier consolidation and other critical value chain services.

“Vaughan has a thriving health technology and life sciences sector. The Vaughan Healthcare Centre Precinct (VHCP) is becoming a magnet for development, showcasing our city as a leading destination for healthcare innovation."

- Mayor Steven Del Duca, City of Vaughan

"We are building the VHCP as an epicentre of health excellence, and with partners like ventureLAB, we’re succeeding! The MedTech Hardware Catalyst Initiative is one-of-a-kind in Canada and will be a huge boost for Vaughan’s growing MedTech sector. Today’s grand opening is a key step forward in the VHCP and represents how effective partnerships can deliver positive outcomes,” said Mayor Del Duca.

Launched in 2020, the Hardware Catalyst Initiative is Canada’s only hardware and semiconductor-focused lab and incubator. The Government of Canada’s investment of close to $10 million has enabled ventureLAB to secure additional funding from the Government of Ontario, the Regional Municipality of York, the the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network, and build a growing global network of over 45 partners who have committed more than $55 million through tools, resources, and expertise. The HCI has worked with close to 60 founders and innovators building hardware and semiconductor-based products and technologies to accelerate their time to commercialization in a sector that typically incurs lengthy and costly time to market.
