The can’t-miss tech events for September 2022

Elevate returns; innovation hubs gather; and technophilosophy is a thing. The September calendar has great events for everyone in Canadian tech.

Here are the tech events you need to know about for September.

Get philosophical about the future

With the Zuckerbergs of the world convinced that humanity’s future lies in the metaverse, it’s clear that new technologies are straining our understanding of, well, everything. On September 19, a group of leading academics from the University of Toronto will attempt to make sense of it all at an evening devoted to technophilosophy. (For the uninitiated, that’s a branch of academia that both asks philosophical questions about tech and uses tech to look at traditional philosophical questions.) The panel discussion will focus on what virtual and augmented reality mean for our societies and our systems of ethics. Big questions; big thoughts. September 19, Isabel Bader Theatre

Help accelerate innovation

The Association of University Research Parks International Conference brings together more than 250 science and technology leaders from around the world. Hosted by MaRS, McMaster Innovation Park and the David Johnston Research and Technology Park, the conference focuses on practical ways to accelerate the pace of innovation, including sessions on supporting commercialization efforts and helping ventures compete in a tough market for talent. September 19–22, MaRS Discovery District

Discover rising tech trends at Elevate

Toronto’s Elevate Festival returns in-person for the first time since 2019. The three-day conference explores the latest trends in technology and the arts. Its talks, workshops and interactive experiences draw an audience of tech types, creatives and other innovators. This year’s speakers include tennis legend Venus Williams, Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, Olympic sprinter Andre De Grasse and Waabi founder Raquel Urtasun. September 20–22, Design Exchange, Meridian Hall and the St. Lawrence Centre for Arts

Build sustainability into your startup

MaRS and Export Development Canada are hosting Startup Expansion: ESG Considerations from a Venture Capital Perspective. You’ll learn how to build environmental, social and governance practices into your startup to make it more appealing to investors and consumers. September 28, online

MaRS is the world's largest urban innovation hub in Toronto that supports startups in the health, cleantech, fintech, and enterprise sectors. When MaRS opened in 2005 this concept of urban innovation was an untested theory. Today, it’s reshaping cities around the world. MaRS has been at the forefront of a wave of change that extends from Melbourne to Amsterdam and runs through San Francisco, London, Medellín, Los Angeles, Paris and New York. These global cities are now striving to create what we have in Toronto: a dense innovation district that co-locates universities, startups, corporates and investors. In this increasingly competitive landscape, scale matters more than ever – the best talent is attracted to the brightest innovation hotspots.
