The COVID-19 pandemic was difficult for many businesses, but none were impacted more heavily than the healthcare industry. Doctors, nurses, and pharmacists were overwhelmed, overworked, and did not have the resources to provide patient care virtually. Luckily, just a year prior, University of Toronto professor Pascal Tyrrell had began working on a solution! He started his company, SofTx Innovations, in 2019 which develops software focusing on bridging the gap between healthcare providers and the digital infrastructure they need to care for patients remotely.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for companies like SofTx Innovations became extremely clear, as the healthcare industry was overwhelmed, and telemedicine turned into a necessity. As a result, SofTx Innovations achieved significant growth during the pandemic. Pascal explains that “Covid has encouraged the idea of telemedicine and digital health, meaning that looking at different ways to deliver healthcare has encouraged the ability to deliver medical attention in a virtual space”. SofTx Innovations’ software is receiving more well-deserved recognition as it is improving wait times, patient efficiency, and access to care for underprivileged communities.

Since SofTx Innovations has started with Innovation Guelph (IG)’s Startup program in 2021, they have received significant support, growth, and dependability. Pascal had worked with IG with his previous startup and credits the company’s reliability and flexibility as the core of its effectiveness. He says that the Startup program “provides what I need when I need it and is more than just money and referrals – they put their clients first and ensure their priority is to help the startups”. Another asset Pascal has found helpful in the Startup program is working with mentors, as they empower their mentees by giving them the support that they require to achieve their goals themselves.

While SofTx Innovations has achieved significant growth in a short time period, this company’s best days are surely ahead! Pascal plans to expand the breadth of SofTx Innovations by offering products including BrainCare.ai, which assists patients who have been discharged from hospitals with acquired brain injuries. Through his journey with SofTx Innovations and the Startup program, Pascal advises entrepreneurs to take their time, pay attention to details, and enjoy the work that goes along with your business.
