Introducing the Finalists of the 2025 Synapse Life Science Competition

Innovation Factory has unveiled the finalists for the 2025 Synapse Competition, Ontario’s premier life science pitch contest, which highlights the vibrancy of Hamilton's life sciences sector. Since its inception in 2013, the competition has fostered over 115 companies, disbursing more than $1 million in awards and supporting participants in raising upwards of $100 million in funding while penetrating over ten global markets. This history emphasizes the Synapse Competition's crucial role in propelling life science innovations and boosting industry growth.

From an initial pool of more than 60 applicants, 15 finalists were selected. These finalists will collaborate with post-secondary students over the next three months, receiving extensive training to hone their business and commercialization strategies. The competition culminates in a final pitch event on March 26, 2025, where five finalists will present their innovations to a panel of judges for the chance to win prizes.

The finalists represent a diverse array of innovative solutions in healthcare. Among them is Atorvia, which is developing therapeutics targeting chaperone proteins implicated in cell death regulation. Bough Bioscience focuses on a drug discovery platform leveraging machine learning to address diseases linked to cellular aging. CELLECT Laboratories creates menstrual blood diagnostics using advanced nanomaterial filters, while Creative Medical Solutions offers an uroflow device that optimizes data management in urology.

DIA Labs Canada has developed AirSense, an AI-driven wearable for constant monitoring of respiratory conditions such as asthma and COPD. Flow Robotics is innovating with a continuum robotic device for diagnosing small intestinal disorders efficiently, enhancing overall patient care. LynxsurfBio Inc. is introducing a handheld biosensor for blood testing that assists in the early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases.

Medloaner (Canada) Inc. provides a platform that automates surgical instrument management, improving operational efficiency, while NewGen Health focuses on early detection of chronic kidney disease through non-invasive urine samples. Nuvia offers non-invasive therapy solutions for post-mastectomy pain syndromes, promoting personalized care via a connected application.

Power of Play is producing a hand-strength measurement tool designed for pediatric settings, while Razroze has developed an AI lifestyle app for early mental health intervention. Re:Pair Genomics utilizes AI for designing customized DNA sequences to improve gene therapy safety, and Snake AI introduced an AI-driven colonoscope aimed at improving procedural efficiency in hospitals. Lastly, Stoked Bio is advancing therapeutic candidates for resistant infections and cancers through AI-driven discoveries.

Beyond competition, the Synapse initiative serves as a collaborative platform fostering innovation in life sciences, allowing companies to translate cutting-edge concepts into viable healthcare interventions. It not only bolsters business development but also connects various stakeholders within the ecosystem, including students, startups, and industry experts.

In summary, the 2025 Synapse Competition is poised to further catalyze life science advancements, underpinning Ontario's commitment to innovation in healthcare and supporting entrepreneurs who shape the future of medical technology.
