Introducing Scott Carpenter: From Engineer to People Champion

Scott Carpenter is a multifaceted individual known for his thoughtful and strategic approach at ventureLAB, where he supports entrepreneurship inspired by his father’s own business journey. Born in New Brunswick, Scott pursued civil engineering at Queen’s University, launching his career in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. There, he managed significant federal infrastructure projects, honing skills in organization, communication, and progressive forward-thinking, which later propelled him in the innovation sector.

His path to ventureLAB began unexpectedly. Upon seeing a job posting, he was intrigued by the opportunity to contribute to entrepreneurship, influenced by watching his father's successful custom file folder company that served clients like hospitals and government offices. This insight cultivated a deep respect for the entrepreneurial craft and its accompanying challenges.

Joining ventureLAB in 2019 as a project manager for FedDev Ontario programs, Scott faced the unique challenge of transitioning to a remote work environment shortly after his hiring. Despite the hurdles, he embraced the situation, adapting swiftly and extending his responsibilities. His proactive mindset allowed him to evolve into roles in business analysis, operations, and ultimately, leadership in People and Culture.

Scott’s leadership philosophy emphasizes empathy, structure, and a focus on cultivating a supportive work culture. He believes in empowering colleagues, making them feel heard and valued beyond just their professional roles. His People and Culture team plays a pivotal role in fostering an environment conducive to both personal and organizational growth.

Outside of work, Scott stays active through lifelong passions for soccer and basketball. Having played soccer since age four, he rekindled his love for basketball after a break. He relishes the thrill and workout basketball provides, viewing it as a blend of fun and fitness.

Additionally, Scott is an avid gamer and a dedicated crossword puzzler, particularly enjoying the challenges posed by New York Times crosswords. Completing every crossword in February and April is something he proudly notes, highlighting his enthusiasm for problem-solving.

These hobbies help Scott maintain a healthy work-life balance, providing necessary outlets that contribute to his effectiveness at work. He believes that time spent outside the office—whether through sports, gaming, or enjoying time with his wife—keeps him grounded and enhances his contributions at ventureLAB.

Scott embodies a calm energy in a fast-paced environment, encouraging team members to embrace excitement and proactivity in their work while also emphasizing the importance of taking time to unplug. His career journey from engineering to an MBA, and from supporting startups to leading people operations showcases his continuous commitment to growth and his deep curiosity about various fields.

Ultimately, Scott’s influence at ventureLAB extends beyond his professional skills; he champions the belief in the power of people and the significance of meaningful work. Whether it’s tackling complex strategies, leading a sports team, or solving crossword puzzles, Scott has become a key player in driving positive change within his organization.
