How Cyberworks Robotics Makes Commercial Cleaning Easy

The use of autonomous cleaning robots is becoming increasingly popular in commercial cleaning, as they can help save time, money, and resources. However, not all autonomous cleaning robots are able to navigate complex commercial spaces, such as those with glass walls or reflective surfaces. That's where Cyberworks Robotics comes in.

In November 2022, Cyberworks Robotics partnered with one of Canada's largest commercial cleaning companies to perform a series of tests at ventureLAB’s Innovation Space, located at IBM's headquarters in Markham, ON. Using industry-standard cleaning machines and driven by Cyberworks Robotics’ autonomous navigation system, the goal was to evaluate its effectiveness in navigating and cleaning commercial spaces. 

ventureLAB’s Innovation Space has been a fertile testing ground for Cyberworks Robotics, with over 50,000 square feet of open area filled with glass walls, mobile desks and live trees, all of which could stress conventional autonomous cleaning machines with risks of systematic failures in operations. 

The results of the testing were proven highly successful, as Cyberworks’ technology was found to be easier to install and teach by non-technical staff, faster and more efficient than conventional autonomous machines, with no failures or human interventions experienced.

The ground floor of the facility is an open-concept space with an area of approximately 25,000 square feet. The ground floor was cleaned autonomously in just 1 hour and 12 minutes with a 19" scrubber. The location of various tables and chairs was changed frequently throughout the testing, but the cleaning machine adapted to the changes each time and was able to continue operation without intervention.

The second floor and higher are mostly carpeted surfaces unsuitable for the wet floor scrubber. However, the second floor contains a food court, eating areas, and corridors that are hard floor surfaces, which the Cyberworks robot was able to navigate and clean these spaces effectively.

With Cyberworks Robotics’ autonomous navigation system, the cleaning equipment follows a Teach and Repeat model, allowing regular cleaning personnel to operate and teach it the desired cleaning pattern. It can adapt to changes in the environment and clean several areas of the building without manual intervention, or tags & beams like other autonomous cleaning machines would normally require. In case the machine becomes stuck, it has the capability to automatically restart itself without the operator having to physically return to the machine and intervene. 

Upon each completion, the machine will automatically email the operator a KPI Performance Report. If multiple machines are being operated, the system offers a Fleet Management platform that allows supervisors to monitor an entire fleet of machines at different locations in real-time, and even take manual control of individual machines through a live video feed and teleoperation.

The autonomous machines are equipped with real-time hardware monitors that check the status of all computers and sensors several times per second. To avoid any potential operational hazards, the machines are also equipped with 3D cameras to continuously scan the entire front and sides of the machine for obstacles to avoid collisions. When operating near walls or obstacles, speeds are automatically reduced for added safety.
