DeepSight Founder on Keeping Focus and Visualizing the End Goal

We sat down with Nicolas Bearzatto, Co-Founder of DeepSight and ventureLAB Alumni, to learn more about his entrepreneurial journey. DeepSight is a is an industry leading platform for Augmented Reality (AR) solutions.

Tell us a little bit about DeepSight.

DeepSight develops a suite of tools that enable companies to use augmented reality to replicate expert guidance and instruction for worker training, upskilling and reskilling. Our solution increases productivity, reduces potential for errors, and empowers workers in the industry 4.0.

How did Deepsight begin?

DeepSight began four years ago as my partner, Francis Dubé, was graduating from university. He was creating a graphics engine for augmented reality experiences, and when he graduated he presented the idea to me. I went to Business School and had already started two businesses, so we decided to work together. Our first concept of DeepSight was to create a virtual map of the city of Montreal to create unique tourist experiences.

We pitched this to a big entrepreneur in Quebec, who was honest with us about our solution and the direction we were going. We slowly pivoted towards a manufacturing use-case. We were introduced to companies working in that field and we saw that there was tremendous potential in bringing our technology to address some of the pressing challenges in that sector.

When you open a door to a possibility, more open. This experience was sort of the first door to get us to the next one.

What are the key resources or initiatives you’ve leveraged as a startup?

In the beginning we were on an independent journey, and did our own thing. We knew where we wanted to go, and had the resources and knowledge to do it. But over time, we saw that although doing it alone enables you to learn and move quickly, collaborating with others can help you accelerate and move further.

Thus, we joined accelerators like ventureLAB and Centech, an Accelerator in Montreal. They’ve really opened the door for us for networking and financing opportunities that we overlooked in the beginning. The ecosystem is very large and sometimes hard to navigate, but it’s worth getting involved and leveraging as many of the opportunities as possible. Collaboration is key.

What have you enjoyed most about starting your own company?

The biggest reward has been the tangible feedback and recognition we get from customers and the “glitter in the eye” of the people we present this idea to. Changing the way people work in industries and manufacturing is no small feat.

Where would you like to see the company in five years?

We have an important and challenging roadmap. If we accomplish all our objectives, I think we can be the leader in the industry.

Right now, we’re focused on work instruction and productivity tools, but we’re already exploring the realms of real-time collaboration and IoT data. We also launched a program for high schools to showcase our augmented reality tools.  We can see that our platform can evolve toward multiple industries and sectors. To get there, we need to continue developing more functionalities, but also focus on keeping it simple and accessible.
