Convoy Technologies Canada Ltd. has recently celebrated the grand opening of its new 18,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Tecumseh, Ontario, reinforcing its commitment to enhanced safety and monitoring solutions for commercial vehicles. This major investment, valued at $17 million, has received support from the Province of Ontario, with funding amounting to $323,984 through the Regional Development Program, Southwestern Ontario Development Fund.
Founded in 2008, Convoy Technologies specializes in manufacturing cameras, monitors, and accessories that integrate cloud-based telematics and AI-driven driver training systems for heavy-duty vehicles and power sports. The company, which is based in Indiana, evaluated multiple locations—including Mexico and Indiana—before choosing Windsor-Essex for its Canadian expansion. Factors influencing this decision included the region’s proximity to the U.S. market, security concerns, cost efficiency, and a skilled labor force skilled in advanced manufacturing.
In the next four to five years, Convoy Technologies plans to invest an additional $2 to $4 million to upgrade facilities and equipment, with expectations to hire between 35 and 50 employees. The renovated facility is designed to meet stringent environmental and cleanliness standards necessary for camera product manufacturing. Alongside these improvements, Convoy Technologies aims to leverage advanced automation technologies to enhance product quality and manufacturing efficiency.
Moreover, the Tecumseh facility will serve as a significant hub for research and development, where the company anticipates launching several innovative products. The choice of Windsor-Essex is also attributed to the collaboration opportunities with local post-secondary institutions that provide a steady pipeline of talent.
Key stakeholders shared their excitement about this new venture. Ron Harker, President of Convoy Technologies Inc., emphasized the facility’s role in delivering innovative vehicle camera technology across various industries, asserting that it represents a vital progression for the company. Doug Matton, General Manager of Convoy Technologies Canada, expressed pride in leading the facility's transformation, highlighting the accomplishments of the local team.
The investment has also garnered attention from Ontario’s government, with The Hon. Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, lauding Convoy’s contribution to Ontario's manufacturing economy. He noted that the investment reflects the province’s growing appeal for companies aiming to expand and innovate. Andrew Dowie, MPP for Windsor–Tecumseh, echoed these sentiments, stating the investment would generate quality job opportunities and enhance the local economy.
Mayor Gary McNamara of Tecumseh welcomed Convoy Technologies, congratulating them on setting up in a thriving manufacturing community. He expressed confidence that the location and skilled workforce would support the company’s success for years to come. Similarly, Gordon Orr, CEO of Invest WindsorEssex, celebrated the opening as a testament to the region’s strengths in advanced manufacturing, highlighting the strategic advantages for companies operating within this ecosystem.
Overall, Convoy Technologies’ arrival not only signifies a substantial economic boost for Tecumseh and Windsor-Essex but also emphasizes the region’s capabilities in innovative technologies, paving the way for future growth in the automotive and related sectors.
