ByCanada.Tech Simplifies Support for Local Tech Initiatives

Derek Jouppi, a seasoned entrepreneur, recently reflected on the tech ecosystem in San Francisco while at a poker table with fellow founders. He realized that one reason for San Francisco's prominence in technology is that local companies frequently engage with one another, ensuring that financial resources remain in the city. This sparked an idea: could the Waterloo Region replicate this model? Jouppi, the founder and CEO of Advite.ai and host of Founder Poker Toronto, aimed to forge connections among local entrepreneurs to foster collaboration and economy.

In light of U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods, Jouppi felt an urgent need to create a platform that could support Canadian startups and tech companies. Hence, ByCanada.Tech was born in February as a national directory tailored for regional tech businesses. The platform functions like a phone book, enabling both businesses and consumers to find local alternatives to American digital products and services. For example, typing "QuickBooks" would highlight the Canadian option of "FreshBooks.”

To build the platform, Jouppi utilized crowdsourcing through LinkedIn, allowing startups to list their information easily. In under a month after the tariffs announcement, the platform amassed 10,000 Canadian startups, promoting transparency and accessibility by only requiring a URL for listing — no sensitive personal data involved.

Recent trends show an increased focus on supporting local businesses, with a study indicating that about 80% of Canadians are prioritizing domestic products over foreign ones. However, this “Buy Canadian Movement” has primarily targeted physical goods, leaving a gap in the realm of technology. Jouppi aims to shift this narrative by encouraging consumers to select Canadian software options despite the lack of geographical constraints that typically limit consumer choices in other sectors.

He argues that while grocery item choices are constrained due to logistics, technological services can be sourced from anywhere, prompting users to choose products primarily based on features, not origin. Through ByCanada.Tech's search functionality, Jouppi hopes to guide users toward Canadian tech innovations that rival American products.

Looking ahead, Jouppi envisions ByCanada.Tech playing an integral role in the wider movement of supporting local businesses across Canada. The comprehensive database he is developing serves as an invaluable tool to help consumers make informed purchasing decisions that favor domestic companies. Jouppi emphasizes that the cumulative effect of supporting Canadian startups will contribute significantly to building a robust tech community in Canada.

The initiative stands as a response not only to the trade tensions but also as a long-term strategy to strengthen Canada's economy. Jouppi posits that the ultimate goal is to help Canadian startups attract and retain Canadian customers by ensuring that money spent remains within the country, thereby fortifying the local economy. Through ByCanada.Tech, Jouppi aims to inspire a shift in consumer behavior, advocating for a technology landscape where Canadian talent and innovation are prioritized – making Canada a leading player in tech.
