Brian Coleman is the founder of "A Heart to Help," a nonprofit initiative he launched in 2022 after a life-long career in healthcare spanning 33 years. Inspired by the desire to give back during the holidays and motivated by the isolation many faced post-COVID, Brian envisioned a platform that could connect people in need with those willing to help. He recognized the emotional toll of loneliness, especially for the elderly, and sought to create a system where individuals could post their needs, knowing the community would respond.
The app officially launched just a few days ago and has already seen over 5,000 downloads. Prior to the app's launch, Brian received requests for help, such as a quadriplegic man in Pakistan desperately needing an electric wheelchair, which Brian facilitated by funding it out of his pocket. This experience cemented Brian's belief in the efficacy of "A Heart to Help" and its mission to connect people over requests for aid, whether that be physical items or emotional support.
The initiative is currently self-funded but has begun forming partnerships with other organizations, such as Olive Press, which provide transitional assistance to families in need, and Food on Foot, which helps the homeless. Brian aims to create a network of resources where nonprofits can post their needs and encourage community involvement. He envisions potential collaborations with for-profit companies like grocery stores to donate surplus goods, bolstering the initiative's mission to alleviate hardships without stigma.
As Brian has developed "A Heart to Help," it has remained his primary focus while balancing two full-time jobs. He derives purpose and fulfillment from this work, viewing it as a way to make a tangible difference in the lives of those struggling. His journey has been influenced significantly by his mother, who raised him as a single parent and epitomized resilience and kindness during challenging times. Witnessing her vulnerability during a moment of financial distress left a lasting impression on Brian, fueling his drive to help others who may be in similar situations of despair.
Looking forward, Brian anticipates "A Heart to Help" evolving into a well-known platform for kindness and assistance, significantly impacting the way people perceive seeking help. Currently, the application hosts about 35 to 40 posts from both individuals requesting help and those offering services or donations. In five years, Brian sees the platform as not just a resource for assistance but as a community hub promoting empathy, kindness, and collaboration. His goal is to foster an environment free of judgment, enabling individuals to seek help without shame, emphasizing that anyone can find themselves in a position of needing support at any time.
Overall, Brian Coleman’s journey with "A Heart to Help" illustrates the power of community and connection, stressing the importance of compassion in today's society. His hope is that the platform will be synonymous with support and kindness, bridging gaps and inspiring collective actions towards helping those in need.
