The Brampton arts community is set to benefit from an exciting new initiative announced by Altitude Accelerator: “Business Basics for Artists.” This program, funded through the City of Brampton’s Advance Brampton Fund, focuses on equipping local artists with essential business skills to help them build and expand their creative ventures.
Collaborating with the Brampton Arts Organization, the program addresses the specific needs of the arts and culture sector. It aims to fortify artists' capabilities in areas like brand visibility, sales opportunities, financial management, and copyright protection. Artists often encounter difficulties managing the business side of their careers, such as marketing and finances, and this initiative seeks to bridge the gap by providing comprehensive support.
The program will consist of a series of virtual workshops covering critical business topics essential for artists. Key offerings include budgeting fundamentals, understanding different business models, and insights into copyright protection to safeguard original works. Additionally, a focused Marketing 101 session will help artists learn about identifying their target market, crafting effective marketing plans, and leveraging online platforms to enhance visibility.
Artists will also receive training on building a prospect list, selling their works effectively, and creating impactful business pitches that highlight their unique value propositions. To further support artists in their entrepreneurial journey, the program will offer online training through RevUp, a self-paced program tailored to help individuals develop strong business plans. Participants will have access to various resources, including tools for market research and credits for cloud and CRM services.
Pam Banks, the Executive Director of Altitude Accelerator, emphasized the need for such support after interacting with local creatives, declaring that while artists have tremendous talent, many lack fundamental business knowledge. She believes in empowering artists with necessary tools to transform their passions into successful careers. Michael Vickers, from the Brampton Arts Organization, underlined the economic importance of artists, stating that they are not just creators but small businesses contributing significantly to economic growth. The arts sector is a vital part of Ontario’s economy, which contributed over $26 billion to the province's GDP in 2022.
Kelly Stahl, Director of Cultural Services for the City of Brampton, highlighted the city’s commitment to enhancing the local economy by supporting initiatives like “Business Basics for Artists.” The city is investing $1.75 million this year into various community initiatives, recognizing the role of professional development in fostering sustainable careers among artists.
The “Business Basics for Artists” program will be available from April to June 2025 and aims to assist a diverse range of local artists, whether they’re illustrators, musicians, painters, or gig economy entrepreneurs. Altitude Accelerator aims to elevate the local arts scene and contribute to Brampton's vibrant economy.
The Brampton Arts Organization acts as a nonprofit advocate for local artists, providing a variety of programs intended to help creatives develop and professionalize their practices. Similarly, the City of Brampton is recognized as one of Canada’s fastest-growing cities, focused on innovation and sustainability, with community health and safety at the core of its goals. Overall, this new initiative represents a significant advancement for Brampton's artistic community, promoting both individual growth and broader economic development.
