Startup Promotes Mental Health Awareness on Blue Monday and Beyond

Winter ushers in shorter days, colder temperatures, and a lack of sunlight, often contributing to seasonal mood struggles and heightened experiences of depression. One day in particular, known as Blue Monday, has been labeled “the most depressing day of the year.” Though its scientific validity is debated and its origins lie largely in marketing, the term has heightened awareness surrounding mental health during the winter months. Research links winter depression to decreased daylight exposure, highlighting a trend that many experience.

Charan Litt, VP of Operations at Layla Care—a platform providing mental health support to Canadians—notes that routine, connection, and activities are vital for well-being, yet these elements often become harder to maintain in winter. The reduced daylight and lower temperatures can lead to isolation, making it increasingly difficult to stay routine-oriented and active. Addressing low mood typically requires personalized strategies since individual experiences and responses vary.

Layla Care advocates for developing a sustainable routine and connecting with others outside of the home. Techniques such as light therapy are recommended, particularly for individuals suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which manifests in depressive symptoms during winter months. According to the Canadian Psychological Association, approximately 15% of Canadians are likely to experience at least mild SAD in their lifetime. Individual therapy sessions can be beneficial for dealing with emotional, cognitive, or physical barriers exacerbated by winter conditions.

The platform also recognizes unique mental health challenges faced by entrepreneurs. A study by the Business Development Bank of Canada revealed that 45% of Canadian entrepreneurs experience mental health difficulties, often stemming from rising costs, anxiety, and work-life balance struggles. There is a noticeable increase in entrepreneurs seeking mental health support, rising from 21% in February 2022 to 31% in February 2023. This trend reflects broader issues affecting Canadian adults; during 2020, one in five adults reported symptoms of depression or anxiety, a figure that climbed to one in four by early 2021 and remained consistent through 2023.

Litt acknowledges that many Canadians today share similar struggles due to financial challenges. Layla Care aims to assist with these mental health hurdles through a tech-driven but human-centered approach, combining virtual and in-person therapy options. Their process starts with a client care team that personally engages with individuals to understand their needs, current coping strategies, and desired therapist qualities. This human connection is crucial for fostering validation and hope among clients.

Layla Care is dedicated to expanding its influence and strengthening community partnerships, emphasizing the sharing of insights and data with practitioners, organizing events, and collaborating on essential research to advance mental health initiatives while continuing to support affected individuals. As Litt emphasizes, seeking help can be draining, and Layla Care strives to make the path to receiving care more accessible for everyone, ensuring individuals find the right support when they're ready.
