November 2024 Roundup – Communitech

Canadian couples facing fertility challenges now have access to a groundbreaking option thanks to Hera Fertility, which has developed an at-home fertility test kit specifically for men. The company aims to tackle the stigma surrounding infertility and expedite testing processes, as Canadian men traditionally wait up to a year to be tested. Founder Thiv Paramsothy emphasizes the importance of democratizing healthcare, allowing individuals to be proactive in understanding their fertility sooner rather than later.

Hera Fertility is part of the inaugural cohort of the Communitech MedTech Accelerator Program, launched in September to support medical technology startups. The program offers growth coaching, networking opportunities with healthcare professionals, and tailored resources to help these founders revolutionize the healthcare landscape. Paramsothy believes that programs like the Communitech MedTech Accelerator are crucial for fostering innovation in the sector.

Additionally, the Communitech Hub hosted the first MedTech Science Fair on November 6, featuring various emerging medtech startups, including Qidni Labs. This event, organized by Communitech and MACcelerate, aimed to connect innovators with healthcare professionals and investors, highlighting the collaborative nature of medtech commercialization.

One of the challenges in healthcare is communication, especially for patients facing language barriers. Seun Adetunji's experience caring for her grandmother sparked the creation of MedInclude, a platform designed to bridge communication gaps between healthcare providers and patients. With backing from the University of Waterloo and Grand River Hospital, MedInclude aims to provide valuable insights and feedback to improve healthcare delivery.

On November 19, Communitech hosted the Fast Track Cities Showcase, where ten Canadian startups presented solutions to community challenges. ConeLabs, which focuses on AI-powered inspections to enhance structural health assessments, was awarded the top prize during the event. Albert Mansour, the company’s CEO, pointed out the urgent need for innovative solutions to maintain the safety of infrastructures under growing demands.

Communitech also announced its latest cohort of the Fierce Founders Uplift program on November 28, spotlighting female entrepreneurs like Shalini Gupta. After undergoing surgery that raised concerns about ovarian cancer, Gupta became dedicated to promoting better health testing accessibility. She advocates for prioritizing patients and improving access to tests for those who may not be considered high-risk yet require regular monitoring.

The Fierce Founders Uplift program, supported by various organizations, provides funding and resources to help women and non-binary founders grow their businesses. Participants receive $10,000 in non-matching funds to enhance their growth strategies.

In leadership updates, Jennifer Gruber, previously CFO at Communitech, took over as interim CEO following Chris Albinson’s resignation. Gruber is committed to ensuring the team is fully equipped to support founders and the broader tech community in their efforts.

This summary encapsulates the significant advancements and initiatives within Canada’s medtech sector, focusing on supporting fertility, healthcare communication, community challenges, and the promotion of female entrepreneurship in technology.

"Communitech helps tech-driven companies start, grow and succeed. Communitech was founded in 1997 by a group of entrepreneurs committed to making Waterloo Region a global innovation leader. At the time it was crazy talk, but somehow this community managed to pull it off. Today, Communitech is a public-private innovation hub that supports a community of more than 1400 companies — from startups to scale-ups to large global players. Communitech helps tech companies start, grow and succeed in three distinct ways: - Communitech is a place – the center of gravity for entrepreneurs and innovators. A clubhouse for building cool shit and great companies. - Communitech delivers programs – helping companies at all stages with access to capital, customers and talent. We are here to help them grow and innovate. - Communitech partners in building a world-leading ecosystem – making sure we have all the ingredients (and the brand) to go from a small startup to a global giant."
