York Region Designated as OVIN Regional Technology Development Site

On June 19, 2025, the Regional Municipality of York was designated as an Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN) Regional Technology Development Site (RTDS). This initiative aims to help entrepreneurs and businesses transition from research and development to commercialization in the smart mobility sector. The York Region RTDS is backed by a substantial financial commitment: $2.5 million from the Ontario government, $4.4 million from local public sector partners, and over $8 million from private sector contributors, amounting to a total of nearly $15 million.

Eric Jolliffe, York Region's Chairman and CEO, highlighted the significance of this recognition, emphasizing how it strengthens the region's position as a leader in Ontario's innovation and smart mobility ecosystem. He stated that the investment fosters an environment where technology can be developed, tested, and brought to market, ensuring a thriving setting for businesses and talent.

This RTDS in York Region is one of nine established across Ontario to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in developing, testing, and prototyping automotive and smart mobility technologies. It receives significant backing from the region's nine municipalities, along with an extensive network of private-sector partners, including industry giants like Siemens, Google Cloud, and Synopsys.

The initiative will be delivered in collaboration with York University and ventureLAB, featuring a comprehensive suite of 12 offerings ranging from ideation to commercialization. York University’s YSpace will focus on smart materials and electrification, enabling firms to leverage cutting-edge labs and research. Meanwhile, ventureLAB’s Hardware Catalyst Initiative supports deep-tech entrepreneurs in commercializing transformative technologies.

York Region's strategic infrastructure includes YorkNet's dark fibre network, municipal fleet vehicles, and open data sets, all designed to facilitate real-world testing, pilot, and validation of new technologies. This combination of resources will aid businesses in scaling their innovations effectively.

The announcement garnered strong support from various regional leaders. Hugh Chow, CEO of ventureLAB, emphasized the importance of regional collaboration in accelerating success for Ontario SMEs, while Amir Asif, Vice President of Research and Innovation at York University, highlighted the program's role in fostering innovation and sustainable mobility solutions.

Raed Kadri, Head of OVIN, reiterated that Ontario is committed to leading the transition to a connected, electric future. He expressed that the initiative provides SMEs with extensive support networks necessary for commercializing products and driving economic growth.

Local Mayors expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, noting its potential to offer resources for entrepreneurs and businesses to innovate. They emphasized the collaborative effort in boosting the technology landscape across various towns and cities within the region.

The decision to create the RTDS is also a reflection of York Region's substantial population and economic framework, comprising over 1.3 million residents and 58,000 businesses. The region aims to bolster its role as a technology hub through initiatives like this, creating an environment where sustainable innovation flourishes.

Overall, with this strategic investment and collaborative approach involving multiple stakeholders, the York Region RTDS is poised to significantly impact Ontario's smart mobility landscape and support the next generation of technological advancements.
