Windsor-Essex FIRST Robotics Announces 2026 Bursary Winners

Five exceptional graduates from local high schools have been awarded $1,000 each through the Windsor-Essex FIRST Robotics (WEFR) organization. WEFR is a volunteer-driven initiative that promotes FIRST Robotics programs in the Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent regions.

The annual bursaries, established to honor the memory of two members of the FIRST community, are named after James Broom and Spencer James. James was a dedicated member of Team 4595 from Maranatha Christian Academy, while Spencer served as a mentor for the Belle River Automatons, Team 4920. Both individuals passed away shortly after the first regional robotics event held in 2014, leaving a profound impact on those around them.

The James Broom and Spencer James Memorial Bursaries are awarded to graduating students of the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) who have shown exceptional dedication to their teams, demonstrated leadership within their communities, and fostered a passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

This year’s recipients exemplify these qualities, showcasing their commitment and contributions to both their teams and the broader community. The bursaries aim not only to recognize these students' achievements but to encourage their continued pursuit of education and involvement in STEM-related fields.

WEFR continues to play a pivotal role in the region, linking students and community members through robotics while fostering a spirit of collaboration and innovation.
