Chathura Fernando, a third-year engineering student, faced a stark reality during his visit to Sri Lanka, the country he left as a child. Walking through the Negombo district, he was immediately struck by the overwhelming smell of garbage burning in the streets. This unpleasant experience highlighted the severe waste management issues plaguing the area. Fernando observed that the local population often resorts to openly burning their garbage due to inadequate waste infrastructure, highlighting the unsanitary and uncontrolled nature of this practice.
This encounter prompted Fernando to recall another tragic incident—the 2017 collapse of an unregulated dumping site in Meethotamulla. That disaster resulted in the loss of 32 lives, destruction of 140 homes, and the displacement of many families. Witnessing both the burning garbage and the consequences of mismanaged waste motivated him to seek a solution to these environmental challenges. Fernando felt a strong sense of responsibility to contribute to a better waste management system.
In response to this urgency, Fernando founded FDO Energy, and has since taken on the role of CEO. His mission is embodied in the development of the Clean Incinerator, an innovative waste-to-energy system that is both portable and trailer-mounted. This technology is designed to manage waste through a controlled incineration process, which effectively converts waste into energy while minimizing environmental harm. The Clean Incinerator also incorporates advanced filtration mechanisms to ensure that the emissions produced are cleaned and rendered non-harmful, addressing the environmental concerns associated with traditional waste disposal methods.
FDO Energy has garnered support from various organizations, including the TechAlliance GROW Accelerator in London, Ontario, and Altitude Accelerator in Brampton. These partnerships have been instrumental in developing Fernando's venture and preparing it for future growth. The company is on track to secure additional funding, with plans to present their initiative at Western Angels’ Demo Day in June. This pitch aims to attract potential investors who can help scale the solution further.
Through his work with FDO Energy and the Clean Incinerator, Fernando is addressing a critical need in Sri Lanka for effective waste management while promoting sustainable practices. His innovative approach could significantly mitigate the environmental impact of garbage disposal and provide a reliable energy source, ultimately improving living conditions and public health.
Fernando's commitment to making a difference showcases how individuals can leverage their education and experiences to tackle pressing issues in their home countries. By combining technology with environmental sustainability, he hopes to pave the way for better waste management solutions and inspire others to seek innovative answers to longstanding problems. His journey, from witnessing the struggles of waste management in Sri Lanka to founding a startup aimed at addressing these challenges, underscores the powerful impact of social entrepreneurship in creating positive change.
