ScaleUP Cohort 9 Open for Applications: Growing Together, Stronger than Ever

The WEtech ScaleUP Accelerator has undergone significant development over its eight years, evolving from a nascent idea into a comprehensive support program for ambitious founders in Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent. Initially, the goal was to create a space where founders could receive ongoing support beyond one-off advice or pitch contests, focusing on learning, testing, and connecting with the right individuals to foster growth.

Central to ScaleUP's philosophy is the belief that a strong community is vital for a founder’s success. The program has adapted to meet various challenges, including the pandemic, during which it launched Scale(back)UP to help businesses stabilize. Throughout the years, different themes have guided the program, be it early validation, export readiness, or cross-border growth. This year, the accelerator is set to welcome external founders through partnerships with Communitech and FedDev Ontario, while still committing to its roots in the local community.

Since its inception, ScaleUP has supported 38 companies, leading to the launch of 170 new products and services, over 200 new jobs, and $39 million in revenue. However, the real success of the program lies in the engagement and mindset of the founders involved. Successful participants exhibit distinct behaviors:

  1. Engagement with Curiosity: Founders who actively seek knowledge and ask questions about their businesses gain valuable insight into areas often overlooked, such as sales strategies and customer feedback.

  2. Maximizing Program Opportunities: The benefits of ScaleUP extend beyond prize money. Founders who actively engage with mentors, implement feedback, and establish valuable connections within the community typically achieve greater momentum.

  3. Viewing Prizes as Leverage: The $20,000 prize is seen as a tool rather than the ultimate goal. For instance, Cohort 7’s Picsume leveraged their win to enhance their go-to-market strategy and secure additional funding, while others like Optimotive found foundational growth opportunities even without winning the top prize.

  4. Collaboration Over Isolation: The program fosters a culture of shared experiences, where founders can openly discuss challenges. This sharing cultivates trust and eventually leads to partnerships and cooperative growth.

  5. Local Integration: Founders who see the Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent regions as assets are often more successful. Cohort 3 winner IPM Scoutek exemplified this by collaborating with local growers to validate their pest management platform, emphasizing that regional partnerships can be crucial in leveraging local strengths.

In the upcoming ninth cohort, applicants must set clear objectives that contribute positively to the regional community, be it through local hiring or partnerships. The foundation laid by the program emphasizes that sustainable growth and community building are intertwined.

ScaleUP is looking for founders committed to lasting impact, who perceive Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent as a base rather than a limitation, and who recognize that building a business and a community are interconnected goals. Applications for this transformative journey close on September 7, 2025, inviting interested founders to be part of this continuing evolution.
