OVIN Regional Technology Development Site in Ottawa Renewed to Boost Innovation in Semiconductors, Smart Mobility, and Autonomous Technologies

Summary of the Ottawa Regional Technology Development Site Renewal Announcement

On June 8, 2026, it was announced that the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN) will renew the Ottawa Regional Technology Development Site (RTDS) with significant investments aimed at fostering the development and commercialization of next-generation automotive and mobility technologies in the region. The Government of Ontario is contributing up to $2 million, which, combined with nearly $2.8 million from private-sector partners and an additional $1.2 million from other sources, brings the total project value to approximately $6 million.

Led by Invest Ottawa in collaboration with the Kanata North Business Association, the Ottawa RTDS operates through Area X.O, Invest Ottawa’s research and development facility for critical technologies. This initiative aims to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Ottawa area, enabling them to develop and test advanced automotive technologies.

Originally announced in February 2026 by Minister of Economic Development Victor Fedeli, the OVIN RTDS network is backed by a $17.5 million provincial investment. This funding is matched by $32.8 million from industry and over $19.3 million from public sector contributions, culminating in a total investment of nearly $70 million.

The Ottawa RTDS is positioned within a robust network that includes major partners such as Cisco Systems Canada, TUV SUD, Wesley Clover International, Carleton University, and the University of Ottawa. By leveraging Area X.O’s smart mobility testing capabilities and the region’s global tech ecosystem, the initiative supports SMEs through technology validation, compliance, and commercialization processes, providing real-world testing opportunities for smart mobility and autonomous systems.

Mayor Mark Sutcliffe emphasized Ottawa’s strengths as North America’s leading tech hub, highlighting how this investment will spur innovation, attract investments, create jobs, and enhance the city’s global technology standing.

Sonya Shorey, President and CEO of Invest Ottawa, pointed out the unique advantages the Ottawa region offers Ontario's economy, particularly in semiconductors and smart mobility. She noted the collective efforts of multiple partners in promoting innovation and translating it into economic growth.

Further emphasizing the importance of real-world testing and collaboration, Jeremy James, CEO of FourDRobotics, and Mary Yazdani, CEO of reasonX Labs, echoed how facilities like Area X.O enable companies to validate their technologies, solidifying Ontario’s appeal as a desirable location for advanced technological development.

Kelly Daize, Executive Director of the Kanata North Business Association, reinforced the significance of commercializing breakthrough technologies for Ontario’s economic competitiveness, while Raed Kadri, head of OVIN, underscored the importance of the RTDS in supporting SMEs to efficiently bring innovative mobility solutions to market, addressing global demand.

Claudia Krywiak, President and CEO of the Ontario Centre of Innovation, articulated the objective behind establishing nine RTDS sites across Ontario: to harness regional innovation for economic impact by providing SMEs with resources and expert support to enhance their competitive edge globally.

In conclusion, the Ottawa RTDS initiative is integral to enhancing technological innovation in the automotive sector, providing crucial support to SMEs, and positioning Ontario as a leader in advanced mobility solutions. Invest Ottawa, along with Area X.O and OVIN, is committed to driving economic growth through innovation and collaboration.
