Innovating MedTech: Deep Breathe Leverages AI for Scalable Diagnostic Solutions

TechAlliance of Southwestern Ontario: Promoting Innovation through the i.d.e.a. Fund

TechAlliance of Southwestern Ontario, based in London, Ontario, operates as a Regional Innovation Centre (RIC) that supports various industries, including AgTech, FinTech, EdTech, Life Sciences, and MedTech. In partnership with five additional RICs, TechAlliance plays a crucial role in the i.d.e.a. Fund™, a program backed by the Government of Canada via the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario).

In its third cohort, the i.d.e.a. Fund™ allocated up to $20,000 in matching seed funding and 30 hours of executive mentorship to 12 innovative companies. This initiative collectively supported 72 companies across a wide geographic area—spanning from Kingston to Niagara and Windsor-Essex—thereby fostering a diverse ecosystem of sustainable, scalable businesses.

CEO Christina Fox emphasized the program's dedication to equity and sustainability, revealing that 60% of participating companies were women-led, 75% were youth-led, 75% identified as BIPOC, and 42% operated as social enterprises.

Spotlight on Deep Breathe Inc.

Among the cohort was Deep Breathe Inc., a MedTech startup founded by Dr. Rob Arntfield, a physician and expert in medical imaging. Frustrated by the limitations in educating physicians about hand-carried ultrasound technology, Arntfield sought to transform his expertise into scalable AI solutions for better lung imaging. By integrating his clinical knowledge into diagnostic tools, he advanced technology that offers radiation-free imaging, thereby making it more accessible across a range of medical settings, from hospitals to military field operations.

Ultrasound technology also provides an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional X-rays, as it relies on sound waves rather than ionizing radiation, aligning with sustainable healthcare practices. Arntfield's journey from traditional innovation to impactful solutions demonstrates an evolution in thinking, proving that true impact comes from empowering others through technology.

Support and Acceleration

The i.d.e.a. Fund™ provided Deep Breathe Inc. not just with financial resources, but also with strategic momentum. The funding allowed Arntfield's team to bring in expert consultants who refined their internal processes and product development plans. He noted, “The funding gave us breathing room to pursue things we might have delayed,” which significantly accelerated their development.

With this backing, the startup achieved a key milestone by submitting its AI model for final testing to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Opportunities for military applications of their technology have also been explored, enhancing the company's scope and utility further.
