ICTC, CSC, CMC Microsystems, and ventureLAB Collaborate to Propel Canada’s National Semiconductor Strategy

Canada's semiconductor industry is considered a global leader, yet it stands out as the only G7 nation lacking a national semiconductor strategy. In light of this gap, a coalition has been formed, including the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC), Canada’s Semiconductor Council (CSC), CMC Microsystems, and ventureLAB, to spearhead the development of a comprehensive Canadian National Semiconductor Strategy.

This collaborative initiative aims to underscore the strategic significance of semiconductors in modern economies while assessing Canada's standing within the global market. Central to this approach will be ICTC's economic impact analysis of the semiconductor industry, which will serve as a crucial tool for illustrating how federal investments can lead to substantial economic growth, job creation, and enhanced commercialization opportunities. It will also highlight how a stable semiconductor landscape could integrate Canada more securely into allied supply chains.

Despite Canada's considerable expertise in semiconductor design, photonics, and advanced packaging, the absence of a national strategy poses significant risks. Without a coordinated plan, Canada risks falling behind peer nations that are making significant investments in their semiconductor sectors. The urgency for this analysis is reinforced by the need to quantify potential returns on investments, which will substantiate the case for a long-term national semiconductor roadmap.

Namir Anani, the President & CEO of ICTC, emphasizes that evidence-based policy recommendations are essential for Canada to maintain its global competitiveness and secure its supply chains. Paul Slaby, Managing Director of CSC, adds that despite technological advancements in various sectors driven by semiconductor innovations—from automotive to AI—the lack of a national strategy could stifle Canada’s capabilities in attracting talent and investment.

The collaboration will also focus on translating research into practical applications and commercial success. Gordon Harling, President & CEO of CMC Microsystems, highlights the need to connect Canadian innovations with economic growth and talent development, ensuring that emerging technologies contribute positively to the Canadian economy.

Moreover, Hugh Chow, CEO of ventureLAB, points out the importance of fostering a supportive environment for startups and scale-ups in the hardtech sector. The initiative seeks to create favorable conditions for the growth of Canadian semiconductor companies, enhancing their global competitiveness.

The findings from this collaboration will be invaluable in advocating for federal initiatives that have been suggested by industry leaders. This includes strategies for expanding the semiconductor workforce, boosting domestic manufacturing and packaging capacities, and enhancing Canada’s automotive semiconductor capabilities.

In summary, the launch of this initiative is a critical step for Canada, aiming to bridge the strategic gap in its semiconductor strategy. By focusing on robust economic analysis and strategic recommendations, the coalition seeks to navigate Canada toward a more secure and competitive position in the global semiconductor arena, reflecting the importance of these technologies in driving future economic growth and innovation.
