From Kitchen Waste to Climate Solutions: How ventureLAB Empowered VCycene to Create an Intelligent Composter

In a Toronto-area kitchen, a bag of vegetable peels and coffee grounds is transforming into nutrient-rich fertilizer in just seven days, thanks to LILA, an AI-powered home composter developed by VCycene. Founded in Vaughan, Ontario, in May 2021, VCycene aims to address a significant environmental issue: food waste. Food scraps in landfills generate methane, a potent greenhouse gas that hinders climate goals. Co-founders George Yin and Huayi Gao envisioned a device that could convert waste into usable compost before it leaves the home.

Creating such a device requires overcoming considerable engineering challenges, including optimizing mechatronics, biochemistry, AI, and IoT. The end goal was to develop a practical and efficient composting solution that eliminates odors and requires minimal maintenance. Ultimately, LILA pairs engineered microbes with AI-driven sensors to expedite aerobic decomposition, turning kitchen scraps into Class A compost within a week.

LILA's impact extends beyond individual households; municipalities like King Township and the District of Muskoka have partnered with VCycene for community composting initiatives, especially where curbside organics programs are unfeasible.

VentureLAB, an accelerator that supports hardware and semiconductor-focused ventures, became a crucial partner for VCycene. Joining the Hardware Catalyst Initiative (HCI) in August 2022 provided the team with essential access to specialized labs for testing and validating LILA's biochemistry, enabling them to achieve regulatory milestones. This validation was critical in certifying LILA's output as a high-quality fertilizer, thus solidifying the company’s claims.

VentureLAB also provided invaluable guidance on intellectual property (IP) strategy, connecting VCycene with programs like ElevateIP and IPON. This structured support is particularly vital for early-stage hardtech companies navigating complex regulatory environments.

Five years since its inception, VCycene has achieved significant recognition. LILA won a "Best of CES 2025" award, and the company has garnered coverage from publications like USA Today. Operating out of ventureLAB’s Markham innovation space, VCycene is now recognized across North America for its innovative approach to composting.
