From Ecosystem Architect to Entrepreneur

Usha Srinivasan's journey from academia to entrepreneurship is layered with unexpected transitions and valuable insights. Trained as a clean technology scientist, Usha began her career rooted in academic research, initially aspiring to be a professor. However, her path shifted when she moved into market research at Frost & Sullivan, where she recognized a gap in support for startups seeking market intelligence.

This insight led Usha to Mars, an innovation hub focused on fostering startup growth. Joining as employee number 25 in 2008, she played a pivotal role in establishing their market intelligence division for startups, offering them access to critical research and insights that would normally cost significant amounts. Her time at Mars, characterized by an entrepreneurial culture and a focus on serving the community, was transformative. Usha found herself immersed in the startup ecosystem, which sparked her interest in entrepreneurship, despite feeling like an imposter at times due to her lack of direct founding experience.

After nearly a decade at Mars, Usha transitioned to elevate her entrepreneurial journey further, taking on a part-time role while co-founding a home social dining initiative called House Chef. However, the pandemic disrupted this venture, leading to a reevaluation of her path. When the opportunity arose to create Brampton Venture Zone, an incubator focused on the area's unique business landscape, Usha took the plunge.

During her five years at Brampton Venture Zone, Usha addressed gaps in existing incubator models by directly engaging with the community and seeking to understand their specific needs. She emphasized the importance of tailoring incubator services to the local economy and fostering connections between startups and established businesses. Usha’s efforts bore fruit, as she successfully built a recognizable entrepreneurial ecosystem, helping dozens of local startups thrive.

The transition to her current endeavor, Be Ready Talent, emerged from her experience at Brampton Venture Zone. Usha identified the challenges newcomers and underrepresented communities face when seeking employment, especially in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Be Ready Talent aims to bridge the gap between qualified talent and SMEs, providing a platform to facilitate meaningful employment, while addressing biases that often sideline potential candidates.

Throughout her journey, Usha emphasizes the value of continuous learning, embracing technology, and staying adaptable to changes in the entrepreneurial landscape. Her insights highlight the importance of understanding community needs, fostering diversity of thought, and providing timely support to entrepreneurs.

Usha's narrative is one of resilience, continuous growth, and a commitment to improving the entrepreneurial landscape for others. Through her experiences, she has distilled crucial lessons about entrepreneurship, underscoring that success is not merely about individual effort but also about building strong, supportive communities that empower diverse talents.
