Featured Leaders Series: Innovation, Influence, and the Power of Purpose: A Conversation with Diane Watson

In a fast-paced world increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence (AI), it's essential to understand that innovation without intention presents risks, and leadership lacking community is fragile. To honor International Women’s Month 2026, Naomi Haile of the Power of Why Podcast collaborated with Invest Ottawa to highlight five influential women shaping Ottawa's innovation ecosystem. This series emphasizes the significance of resilience and courage among women who navigate spaces that traditionally weren't designed for them.

The episode begins with Diane Watson, a global technology leader whose career trajectory has spanned continents, various industries, and technological shifts. Diane’s journey began unexpectedly when she chose to study computer science, leading to a fulfilling career in telecommunications, cloud technologies, and cybersecurity. Influenced by the Japanese concept of ikigai, Diane emphasizes her commitment to representation, mentorship, and community building as crucial elements of her purpose.

Diane provides practical insights into cybersecurity, essential for any business operating in today's increasingly digital landscape. She stresses the need for founders to protect three critical areas: identity, data, and backup, while also addressing the new risks AI introduces, such as deep fakes and phishing scams. She reframes security not as an expense but as essential insurance for any enterprise.

Beyond the technical aspects, Diane reflects on themes of job loss and reinvention, highlighting how community became a source of healing during uncertain times. She founded Tech2Step Ottawa, which aims to reinforce adaptability as a crucial skill in the evolving business environment. Diane observes that her definition of success has shifted from personal achievement to the broader impact of her contributions to the community.

The episode also teases Diane’s upcoming children's book, a cybersecurity adventure aimed at introducing young girls to STEM topics through storytelling.

Diane shares a personal story that reshaped her leadership journey. While serving as Chair of the Women in Communications and Technology National Capital Region (WCT-NCR), she faced hesitation when encouraged to apply for a prestigious board position at Invest Ottawa. This moment led to self-reflection, where she recognized a common pattern among women to postpone taking action until feeling completely qualified, unlike their male counterparts.

An insightful question from her Vice-Chair, “What do you have to lose?” broke through her initial reluctance. Though she didn’t secure the board seat, the experience led to an invitation to serve on a subcommittee focused on women founders and funders. This opportunity proved transformative, allowing her to witness and influence capital conversations that shape access and opportunities.

Her journey affirmed that influence comes not only from holding titles but also from meaningful contributions. After revitalizing the WCT-NCR board, Diane expanded opportunities for women to participate, encouraging them to lead initiatives and gain governance experience.

Diane Watson’s trajectory reflects her expertise in technology while underscoring her dedication to fostering an inclusive tech ecosystem. With over two decades in the field, including roles at Nokia and Fujitsu, she combines technical prowess with a drive for mentorship and community development. Her endeavors in advancing the roles of women in tech and creating pathways for underrepresented voices are vital components of her legacy.

As a past chair of WCT-NCR and a vice president at Tech2Step Canada, Diane exemplifies the blend of technical excellence and purpose-driven leadership, working tirelessly to empower the next generation of women in innovation.
