Crewscope Secures Over $1 Million in Pre-Seed Funding to Boost Productivity for Construction and Industrial Teams

Every startup strives to innovate and transform its industry, but some, like Crewscope, succeed by addressing real-world challenges with practical solutions. Crewscope, a Toronto-based ConstructionTech startup, recently raised over $1 million in pre-seed funding, led by Groundbreak Ventures. Notably, the funding round includes a strategic partnership with EllisDon, one of Canada’s largest general contractors, aimed at enhancing Crewscope's AI software designed for hourly construction and industrial workers.

Founded by CEO Calvin Benchimol, Crewscope emerged during challenging times as the pandemic highlighted a significant lack of technological solutions in the construction industry. Benchimol’s background in logistics for a major operation illuminated the importance of equipping workers with essential information for success. His experiences in the health and safety software sector emphasized a crucial insight: frontline participation correlates with safer outcomes. This understanding shaped Crewscope’s core philosophy, focusing on empowering workers to proactively manage risks, thereby enhancing safety on job sites.

Crewscope's approach is rooted in extensive research, having interviewed over 100 industry experts, including field workers and project leaders. These discussions revealed persistent problems, such as the high turnover rates for skilled labor and a disconnect between hourly workers' compensation and project timelines. Notably, the construction sector faces a shortfall of over 500,000 skilled workers, with 40% expected to retire by 2030, alongside a troubling decline in labor productivity since 1970, far exceeding other industries. Today's workforce demands more than just financial incentives; workers seek meaningful roles, clear expectations, timely information, and recognition for their contributions.

The startup aims to redefine labor productivity within an industry plagued by inefficiencies like cost overruns and schedule delays. As Scott Kaplanis of Groundbreak Ventures states, Crewscope's integration of on-site communication with a gamified incentive system is a powerful tool for team empowerment and operational improvement. Notable early adopters, including Hazelview Investments and LafargeHolcim, have validated Crewscope's concepts, and strategic partnerships position the company favorably for future growth.

For a startup in its nascent stages, early endorsements are vital. They lend credibility and open doors to contracts and expansion opportunities that can often be elusive. Benchimol credits guidance from advisors, such as Geoff Simonett, for accelerating Crewscope’s progression by refining their pitch and connecting them with key industry players.

Looking ahead, Crewscope plans to leverage its recent funding to expand across North America by utilizing predictive AI to empower construction teams with essential tools. Benchimol envisions this milestone as a starting point, emphasizing that the role of construction and industrial teams is critical to the economy yet currently underserved by existing technologies. His goal is to equip workers with information that will allow them to work effectively, be compensated fairly, and grow professionally. With support from partners and continued innovation, Crewscope aims to create a transformative impact in the construction sector by fostering a workforce equipped for success with purpose, clarity, and recognition.
