Ariella Racco, founder and CEO of CoLab Education, has always desired a career in teaching. After graduating with a Bachelor of Education from McGill University, she taught elementary and middle school in Canada. Racco recognized the challenges teachers face due to isolated work environments, where even with supportive colleagues, they often lack a broader network to share resources and ideas.
During her teaching career, Racco experienced the frustration of being the only French or Biology teacher in a school, creating a sense of isolation. She observed that educators frequently have to develop curriculum content independently, which can be daunting and exhausting. This realization intensified during a project-based learning unit, where Racco and her team recognized the need for collaboration among teachers across different schools. They wondered why there was no platform for sharing experiences and best practices, prompting her to connect with hundreds of educators across Canada.
This journey ultimately led to the founding of CoLab Education, a professional networking platform designed specifically for educators to connect, collaborate, and share resources. Racco describes teachers as the "original content creators," noting that while many educators have turned to social media for support, the information is often scattered, superficial, and mixed with irrelevant content. CoLab aims to provide a dedicated space where teachers can find meaningful resources without the distractions commonly found on social media.
Racco also addresses the desire of teachers for clearer work-life boundaries, as social media often fails to separate professional interactions from personal ones. By focusing on educator-specific needs, CoLab Education caters to a niche that is underserved in traditional networking platforms.
As a new founder, Racco has received support from YSpace, an entrepreneurship hub, allowing her to access mentorship and collaborate with peers. This has been invaluable in helping her navigate the challenges of shifting from teaching to tech entrepreneurship. CoLab Education has rapidly expanded, now connecting teachers from ten countries and forming partnerships with schools and educational organizations across North America.
While educational curricula can vary by region, Racco believes that the overarching principles of teaching transcend geographical boundaries. The excitement among teachers to connect and share expertise on CoLab reflects a universal desire for collaboration in fostering innovative teaching practices. Ultimately, CoLab Education is set to enhance the support network for educators, empowering them to enrich the learning experiences they provide.
