CITM Designated as OVIN Regional Technology Development Site to Foster Smart Mobility Innovation in Hamilton-Halton Areas

On May 15, 2026, the Centre for Integrated Transportation and Mobility (CITM), part of Innovation Factory, announced renewed funding as one of nine Regional Technology Development Sites (RTDS) within the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN). The funding, exceeding $69.6 million, includes $17.5 million from the Government of Ontario, matched by $32.8 million in industry investment, along with $19.3 million from the public sector. This strategic financial commitment aims to bolster Ontario's automotive and mobility ecosystems, ensuring local solutions support job creation, economic growth, and long-term competitiveness.

CITM plays a pivotal role in Ontario’s automotive and smart mobility sectors, offering specialized technical and business assistance to small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Its focus areas encompass electrification, alternative powertrains, energy infrastructure, autonomous and connected vehicle systems, smart transportation, and Transportation-as-a-Service (TaaS) innovations.

The organization utilizes a robust, multimodal innovation framework in the Hamilton and Halton regions, drawing on the extensive road, rail, port, and air infrastructure available. CITM fosters a collaborative environment for SMEs, providing pathways to leading research institutions like McMaster University and Mohawk College for advanced prototyping and material testing. Additional resources include advanced technology platforms, 5G access through Rogers Communications, and telematics data from Geotab, alongside AI support from partners like NeuronicWorks. Living lab environments at HOPA Ports and Hamilton International Airport further enhance R&D and testing capabilities.

The recent funding is expected to strengthen the local economy, facilitating transitions from concept development to market deployment, ultimately promoting job growth across Ontario. CITM's commitment ensures that the Hamilton and Halton regions remain integral to the province’s mobility supply chain, transforming homegrown innovations into global commercial successes.

David Carter, CEO of Innovation Factory, emphasized that the major obstacle for mobility start-ups isn’t just technological perfection but providing a safe environment for large-scale testing. He highlighted CITM’s role in offering a clear path to specialized R&D and technical expertise, reducing risks for innovators when entering the market.

Raed Kadri, OVIN’s Head, affirmed Ontario's leadership in the automotive industry, stating that RTDS provides SMEs access to a vast network of resources and expertise, which alleviates barriers for start-ups to generate locally-sourced solutions that can meet broader customer needs and enhance economic growth.

Claudia Krywiak, President and CEO of the Ontario Centre of Innovation, noted that OVIN is establishing a province-wide system aimed at connecting regional innovations to significant economic impacts. The creation of nine RTDS allows SMEs access to top-notch infrastructure and expertise, ultimately speeding up commercialization and strengthening supply chains to tackle global competition.
