Canadian Armed Forces and Innovators Test Defence Technology at Area X.O in Killaloe

On August 11 and 12, 2026, the Department of National Defence (DND) held the inaugural RED COBALT Uncrewed Systems (UxS) Accelerator at the newly established Area X.O Killaloe. This event marked a significant step in Canada’s defense innovation landscape, showcasing advanced technologies like drones and counter-drone systems, and fostering collaboration between Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) operators and defense startups. The demonstration took place on a historic 6,600-foot runway, last used during the Cold War, now transformed into a dynamic testing and innovation hub.

Approximately 200 CAF personnel interacted with over 20 defense innovation companies, including 18 Canadian firms, each focusing on cutting-edge aerospace technologies. The event emphasized a collaborative model at the heart of Ottawa-Gatineau’s Global Defence Innovation Hub—where traditional defense strategies intersect with modern technological solutions. Day two featured keynotes from notable figures, including David McGuinty, Minister of National Defence; General Jennie Carignan, Chief of Defence Staff; and Lieutenant General Darcy Molstad, emphasizing the importance of innovation and adaptation in defense capabilities.
