Founded by Garrett Johnson, the company addresses a significant gap in Canada’s construction sector—the absence of high-performance, bio-based insulation materials, which are already established in Europe. Johnson identified a range of innovative and sustainable insulation products available in Europe, yet found Canada lacking viable options that meet environmental standards and offer competitive performance.

In his quest for a solution, Johnson began developing a prototype for a bio-based insulation material. Early funding was crucial for his efforts, and the i.d.e.a. Fund™ became instrumental in Johnson’s venture. It facilitated the first third-party lab tests and helped transform initial prototypes into validated products, marking a critical step in their development journey. With the Fund’s support, his team also traveled to Alberta for larger-scale samples and quantitative testing, laying the foundation for commercialization.

Looking forward, Johnson is optimistic about the continued role of the i.d.e.a. Fund™ in supporting Hundred Year Materials' journey toward commercialization, which includes obtaining regulatory approvals, developing the supply chain, and marketing strategies. He has found mentorship at Boundless Accelerator to be incredibly valuable, providing guidance to maintain focus on the overarching goals while prioritizing key product aspects.

His experience offers important lessons for other entrepreneurs: adaptability and a focus on problem-solving are critical. "Fall in love with the problem, not the solution," he advises, emphasizing that flexibility is vital in developing a successful product that may differ significantly from initial expectations.
